Amidst the mourning, Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of the Portuguese national team and close friend of Jota, spoke with words of condolence and tribute to his colleague:
🗣️ Cristiano Ronaldo said: “Today is one of the saddest days of my career and my personal life. Losing a teammate, a friend and an extraordinary human being like Diogo Jota is impossible to accept. He was an example of dedication, joy and humility, on and off the field. My heart goes out to Diogo’s family and to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. May God welcome you with open arms, brother. We will never forget you.”
Ronaldo’s message resonated around the world and was accompanied by expressions of support and condolences from clubs, colleagues and fans, who paid tribute on social media.
Diogo Jota, who had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso just two weeks earlier, leaves behind a legacy of talent, charisma and professionalism. His passing will be forever remembered by fans of Liverpool, Wolverhampton, Porto and, most importantly, by the Portuguese football family.
The accident occurred on the A-52, in the province of Zamora, Spain, and also killed his brother André. Spanish authorities confirmed that both died at the scene.
