BREAKING: Senate ‘moving toward a vote today’ on Trump megabill despite resistance (video)

The U.S. Senate is gearing up for a crucial vote today on a significant legislative package championed by President Donald Trump, despite facing substantial opposition from Democratic lawmakers. The anticipated vote comes after nearly 20 hours of debate on the Senate floor, as the administration aims to meet a self-imposed deadline of July 4th for the bill’s passage.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking on a news program, expressed optimism about the legislative process, stating that Senate leadership is making progress toward a vote. He characterized the extensive debate as a necessary part of the legislative process, attributing delays to Democratic efforts to obstruct what he described as a “big beautiful bill.” Bessent underscored the momentum behind the bill, linking it to Trump’s broader policy agenda which spans issues from border security to international trade.

As discussions around the bill intensify, critics have raised concerns regarding its implications, particularly regarding tax breaks purportedly favoring the wealthy. Bessent countered these assertions by referring to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which reportedly increased the tax contributions of the top 10% of earners while simultaneously introducing tax relief measures aimed at working-class Americans. He highlighted provisions that eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, lower taxes on social security, and allow for the deductibility of American-made cars as significant benefits for the working population.

The bill has also drawn criticism from some Republican senators, including Thom Tillis, who voiced concerns about potential negative impacts on Medicaid and the possibility of millions losing access to healthcare. Bessent replied that while they aim to ensure Medicaid availability for those in need, the inclusion of work requirements is an essential aspect of the reform aimed at reinstating pre-pandemic eligibility levels.

In response to comments from tech entrepreneur Elon Musk regarding the bill’s potential to increase the national debt by $5 trillion, Bessent firmly disagreed, asserting that the legislation would stimulate economic growth and ultimately offset any initial increases in deficit. He emphasized that projections from the Congressional Budget Office underestimated the potential for recovery and growth.

On the topic of trade negotiations, Bessent confirmed that no new trade deals would be announced until the bill is signed into law. He indicated that discussions with India are progressing positively, noting that experienced trade officials have expressed optimism about the agreements being negotiated.

The administration’s approach to international trade has been characterized by a commitment to fairer deals for American workers. Bessent stated that President Trump has made it clear that any agreement must prioritize the interests of the American public, rejecting deals that do not meet those criteria.

As the Senate prepares for the critical vote, the outcome remains uncertain. However, the administration’s strategy reflects a broader ambition to reshape economic policies and trade relations in a manner that they believe will benefit the American workforce. With the deadline looming, all eyes are on Capitol Hill as lawmakers prepare to make a decision that could have lasting implications for the nation’s economy.
